10 Short Stories
Kilmainham Dawn is a very early story, written at the time I decided to try to write seriously. It won a first prize at a literary competition. It is also a tribute to the men and women of 1916 who fought to set Ireland free.
Payday Terror is a true story. I was twenty five, newly married and in fear of my life.
Cable Car is another very early story. I spent two years in the Bay Area as a student at the University of California.
Roses in Vienna. I wrote this story recently, after we walked in the Volkesgarten and experienced one of the magnificent Viennese thunderstorms.
The Carpenter’s Bench is inspired by the life of the Holy Family before they left Nazareth for Jerusalem. I wanted to show them as human beings.
Five Lamps is based on the true journey of my mother, Frances McGrath, across war-torn Liverpool in 1943 to reach Waterloo. Not everything in the story happened, because I have added a large spoonful of imagination and romance.
The Winged Horses of Anver is science fiction and my tribute to Anne McCaffrey’s wonderful Dragons of Pern series.
Into the Sunset and Mistaken Identity were both inspired by wondering what had happened to the characters in the two operas, Fanciulla del West and La Bohème, after the operas were over. I had fun creating the next chapters in their lives.
Claudia is an interesting historical character and I enjoyed imagining how she might have felt and acted when her husband, Pontius Pilate, sentenced Christ to death.
The Petticoat Duel
My latest Regency Romance.

Newly widowed, Thea brings her stepdaughter, Amelia, to London for the 1814 Social Season. Beautiful and rich, Amelia should have no difficulties in finding a suitable husband, but a sharp tongue and an unwillingness to accept the rules of Regency society play havoc with her chances.
After five years in an unhappy marriage, Thea is returning to London for the first time since her own debut. There she meets old friends who have not forgotten her and one old friend in particular remembers her very well indeed.
An unwise friendship leads Amelia into dangerous mischief, causing the startling spectacle of two women fighting with swords, early one morning in a dank and misty spinney.
